S2 Blog Task 3

The designer I investigated is the work of the famous Japanese graphic designer Yusaku Kamekura, who is also one of the founders of Japanese modern graphic design. Yusaku Kamekura graduated from New Architecture Institute of Industrial Fine Arts in 1935, and served as the president of Japan Graphic Design Association. The poster series he designed for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964 attracted worldwide attention. I think there is a mixed but unified sense of design in his visual works.

Figure 1. EXPO’70 Poster

In figure 1, this is the poster of EXPO’70 designed by Yusaku Kamekura for the World Expo in Japan. At that time, the advertising photos took the flavor of still life paintings as the mainstream, and most of them showed the paintings that Japanese local artists and designers liked. However, Yusaku Kamekura strongly suggested using the real photos that were confused with the reported photos, which involved the viewers in the dynamicism of the times. Therefore, when watching his works, it seems to be a static flat work, but it is dynamic. In fact, this design style is related to Yusaku Kamekura’s study and work experience. Although he advocates Japanese culture, his design is based on the simplicity and modernization of the West, so his works can be widely loved internationally.
